The History Of The Beer Glass

6 October 2011

Approved by:
Paige Master, Gainesville Weddings in Gainesville Florida

Beer has been a favorite drink for a long time, going all the way back to history. As beer changed over time, and improved to meet a changing taste, the way we drink it changed as well. Some of the earliest beer holders were carved out of wood, or were made from pottery, earthenware, and even strips of leather sewn together. As time went on, man saw small improvements in the quality of their beer glasses. Early Europeans who lived during the time of the Bubonic Plague, even saw the creation of beer steins, which included an enclosed top to stop the flies from getting into the drink and making people sick.

Glass changed the course of history when it comes to beer glasses. As beer glasses began to grow in popularity, people really appreciated the fact of being able to see what they were drinking. This led to the filtration of beers; people no longer wanted the coarse chunks that were often found in the earlier beers of the breweries. With this new, more aesthetically pleasing wave of beer glasses, it seemed like beer steins were on the way out.

The development of glassware continued and produced a variety of beer glasses for all kinds of different beers. America’s favorite beer glass was the 16-ounce pint glass. That type of glass was initially used to fit the top of a Martini shaker, but it soon became apparent that pouring beer from the tap to the pint glass allowed some of the carbonation out, and gave the beer a more intense flavor. Since this type of glass could easily be stacked together, bartenders soon chose it as one of their favorite beer vessels.

Some breweries really went out of their way to promote their products and attract people to buy their brands, thus setting the ground for future marketing techniques. In many cases, breweries were not able to give out beer for free, but it was okay for them to give out glasses with their name on them.

And of course, this led to the production of beer glasses that became a classic In themselves. The first were ornate and expensive; they would often have gold or silver embossed on the sides. Artists working for the breweries began to etch more elaborate logos on the glasses, and they soon came up with a way to use enamel paint. Collectors love the enamel glasses, even if they are not as old as other types of glasses. Today, many of the collectibles and even the signs, are worth a lot of money. Have you looked up in the top of Grandpa’s old drawer lately?

Can You Drink Beer Responsibly? Here’s How

16 September 2011

Paige Master, Gainesville Weddings in Gainesville Florida

Being the most popular alcoholic beverage in existence, beer is everywhere. Indeed, it is so easy to find that too many people drink irresponsibly.

Try to drink only in small quantities. If you drink more than what is socially called acceptable, then you might be dealing with a problem with alcoholism. People that only drink a little and know when to stop don’t become addicted.

Drink beer at home. Drinking at homeis likely the best way to drink responsibly. This will eliminate the danger associated with driving or getting into a confrontation with others.

Never drive after you drink. If you have consumed beer, it is best not to drive. It is against the law and it is dangerous. You can always walk or ask someone for a ride where you need to go.

If you have been drinking and you are out somewhere, you should catch a taxi ride or ask someone to take you home. Anyone, from a friend, to a taxi or a family member, will be glad to take you home. You should never drive if you’ve been drinking. This could not only endanger your life, but those of others as well.

Never leave your drink unattended in a public place. This is especially true of restaurants, bars and/or anywhere that alcohol is served. Anyone can drop a substance in a drink that’s left unattended. If you get up to dance or go to the restroom, order a new glass of beer when you return. If you are just mingling, take your drink with you.

In the United States, an individual must be 21 years of age to purchase and/or legally consume beer. You will be asked to show a form of picture ID before you can buy alcohol. This can be in the form of a driver’s license or other similar form of identification, which features a photo and birth date of the customer. Some US retailers do not allow the sale of alcohol before 12 pm on Sunday.

If you or someone you know, has problems with alcohol, do not hesitate to contact a treatment center. Alcoholism is an illness, and as such it must be treated by a professional; treatment can often lead to a lasting cure.

Food Props Must Be FDA-Approved If They Will Be Used Near People And Real Food

24 May 2011

Until recently, no fashionable home lacked a bowl of wax fruit as a dining table centerpiece. And, although not nearly as popular as they used to be, many homes still display faux apples, grapes and bananas as decor pieces, though they are no longer made from wax. We generally see display foods in supermarkets, restaurants, and coffee houses, but they may also be used by doctors to teach balanced nutrition, by interior decoraters who stage houses, and by the entertainment industry.  They are more common than you might expect, and are used for a wide variety of business purposes.

Modern fake foods are carefully produced with plastics, most notably vinyl chloride which can withstand heat, light and moisture without breaking down. The reproduction process is relatively long and sophisticated, and starts with a silicone mold of the food to be imitated. Color is then carefully matched in liquid plastic, then poured into the mold and heated until it becomes solid. In some cases, a clay model is sculpted and painted, with each garnish, condiment or other addition separately and painstakingly manufactured to make the finished product as realistic as it can be.

Practically all display foods are fashioned by hand, an art that was perfected in Japan at the end of World War II, when foreigners began to arrive to help rebuild the country. Because these foreigners were unable to read the menus, candle makers and other artisans created paraffin duplicates of the dishes offered at restaurants, allowing customers to see what their food would look like. Wax continued to be used as the main ingredient of food props until the mid-’80s, when more durable materials became popular.

One would not expect the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have an interest in fake food, but the fact is that even if it is not ingested, some of the chemicals used in its manufacture can leach out and taint any real food in its proximity. For this reason, any food props used in grocery stores, restaurants or other areas that contain real edibles must pass FDA inspection.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance that careful attention be paid to the source of any fake food display. Much of the product made overseas contains lead paint and other contaminants; although these fake foods typically cost less than their high-quality, more expensive counterparts, the savings are not worth the risk. Purchasing fake foods from a reputable company whose product has been approved by the FDA is the best way to ensure the safety of consumers and should be the principal concern of those who use food props for any display.

Eating Like A King In The Conch Republic

10 February 2011

So you know very well what Southern food is made from, Creole, New England and Midwestern. Every area in this land has its claim to fame. No matter if its corn or potatoes, seafood or game, these staples to family meals and cultural identity are all over. The Florida Keys (also known as just “the Keys”), thanks to its seclusion from the majority of the country, boast their very own food identity and culture. Whenever you go, try something new. You’ll be happy to realize that the foods closest to their locality and culture are a few of the best in the world.

For the most part dining establishments are casual in ambience so you won’t need to dress up. You’ll come across fish and seafood in practically every menu. You’ve got to ask for konk, snapper, grouper and mahi. Make an effort to dine in exterior tables to get the very best sunset views.

Grits and grunts: A grunt is a pretty little fish, frequently mistaken for small snapper if caught by a beginner fisherman. It is one of the most typical fish within the Florida Keys, consequently regularly eaten. Cook these little fishies up with some bacon, blackening and butter and you’re golden. Grits are a very good, smooth side (or under) dish for these fish.

Conchs: They say that, the Keys seceded from the union in 1982 then renamed their chain of islands the Conch Republic. The conch (Greek for shell) is easily found in the shallow waters surrounding the islands. Just like all abundant food options, conch is often eaten and cooked splendidly.

Lobster: It goes without saying, lobsters are in the neighborhood. And they’re excellent. Try a lobster reuben and your taste buds should thank you.

Margaritas, Pina Coladas and Corona: There are lots of watering holes in Key West, as it’s an island for y-type people. The keys are nothing but a seaside retreat. Drink beach vacation drinks. Try and reconstruct your favorite Corona commercial, it won’t be hard.

Chocolate Covered Keylime Pie: This scrumptious pie is named after the small little limes that make the desert. Key limes are available throughout the Keys. It was invented in Key West by Aunt Sally, so they say.

Brazilian Steak: They Keys offer several of the finest Brazilian-style steakhouses. All of them have “gauchos” or stack carvers. You will be able to devour unlimited servings of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and sausage.

Cuban Coffee: In case you threw back a few too many Coronas, drinking Cuban coffee at bars all over is a sure way to recuperate. You’ll find this Cuban crack all over the Keys.

On the Economical Side: There are numerous ways you’ll be able to sip a complimentary glass of wine with a main course for free. Just search for coupon offers from several of the top hotels. You will be surprised on the deals you may come across.

Always remember, even though generally dining establishments may add the service fee to everyone’s bill, be certain that it adds up to 20% – even if food or service wasn’t the very best, anyone can have a imperfect day. As you’re in the vicinity of Florida Keys, keep in mind that there certainly are many options for lodging accommodations, including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and even Bluegreen resort options.

Even the critiques you read about Orlando restaurants might be somewhat over whelming to pick from. Therefore, listed here are few narrowed down top restaurants.

Island Time, All the Time

Tommy Bahama is largely recommended restaurant for their stakes, and seafood. Do not permit the funky flowery shirts, Bermuda shorts as well as tropical dcor fool you, their other scrumptious selections also are a treat for your taste buds. The closest thing to a genuine Hawaiian cuisine, the restaurant carries selections including Loki-Loki Tuna Poke appetizer made of fresh, uncooked Ahi tuna marinated in sesame oil and spices that come with a layered fresh guacamole and side of flatbread crisps. And that is merely an appetizer; the main dishes are unimaginably far more appealing!

If meat and potatoes are your thing then try The Tobago Tenderloins with maple-brined, grilled pork tenderloin served with sweet potatoes and asparagus. Couple it up some decadent Cooper Island Crab Bisque and you’ll be wonderfully ‘tummy filled’ happy.

Nevertheless don’t let that prevent you to from dining in; the inside is abundantly decorated with genuine Thai dcor which is bound to make you feel like you are really in Thailand.

Terrific Teppanyaki

A visit to the Teppanyaki restaurant called Benhihana Orlando is really a must. It’s found next door to The Fountains and is known for its dual role of part dining and part floorshow of Japanese bistros. The floorshow is where the food is cooked on display before your eyes, on a hibachi grill surface. You’ll have the pleasure of admiring chef’s skills of flipping knives, pop up pieces of meat and make a smoking volcano from an onion.

How To Commence Producing Home Brew Beer

24 January 2011

Approved by:
Paige Master, Gainesville Weddings in Gainesville Florida

Purchasing a home brew kit or creating one’s own are ways to begin making home brew beer. Making one’s own kit does not require much. Just a few pieces of basic equipment. Some reasons people might choose to brew their own is that it is less expensive than purchasing commercial beers. Another reason is that they have control over selection and taste.

Creating a research library that is fully stocked is a key step in beginning the process. There are a couple of ways one can begin brewing privately. One is to start with a kit. A kit comes with pre-hopped malt in a tin. A basic brew is created just by adding water and yeast.

A hobbyist can also start by creating a kit. Each piece of equipment can be purchased a la carte to put one’s own kit together. It is essential to buy a beer pot or a brew kettle. It should not be made from aluminum or any other metal. Metal creates a metallic taste in the final product which affects the overall quality of the drink. Seven gallons is a suggested size. A pot or kettle of seven gallons typically yields about five gallons of beer.

The next piece of equipment a person will need is a fermenter. In addition, it is important to have an airlock. A fermenter is typically made from food-grade plastic and has an air tight lid. It will also usually have a spigot attached to the bottom. An airlock prevents air from entering the container. It also assists in removing carbon dioxide.

Plastic tubing is necessary for transferring the beer from the pots to the bottles. The tubing needs to connect to bottles with non twist-off bottle caps. A carboy is one way to ferment the product further. Getting the right mix often necessitates longer times fomenting. A carboy is a spacious, glass jug. It has its own air lock and its own rubber stopper. It is best not to use wooden utensils and containers. This is true because wood is porous and is highly open to contamination.

Aside from equipment, a person will need water, hops, yeast and sugar or malt. Adding extra hops will create a more bitter taste. For those with a milder palate, it is a good idea to put just a little less. The recommended amount is about an ounce.

To begin personal brewing, one must boil water. Near the time the water begins to boil, the hops and malt are added. All the ingredients should be at a boil for at least a full hour. This makes wort. These steps do not complete the process, however they are a start to understanding home brewing. Resources are abundantly available. Two places to find them are a store that emphasizes personal brewing or on the Internet.

Creating home brew beer is an attractive hobby for those wishing to save on their alcohol budget. It is also attractive to people who want to have more control over taste and selection. There are some simple ways to begin. One is to use a home brew kit. Another is to use some basic equipment, purchased piece by piece. If a kit is not used, then one will need to purchase and use hops, yeast and malt. It is also important for either method to have plenty of water available.

Brewing Beer Instructions For Beginners: Guidelines To Follow

23 January 2011

Approved by:
Paige Master, Gainesville Weddings in Gainesville Florida

It is very easy for a person to make their own home brew. As long as they follow the brewing beer instructions given to them, then they can make their own beverages. Once a person has collected all the ingredients, they need to be attentive to detail and portray some patience if they are to produce a good cocktail. The fermenting process takes place in four steps. It involves using ingredients such as water, brewer’s yeast, malt extracts and hops. Make sure you conduct some research prior to getting started.

Water is of key importance for the success of the process. It is for this reason that people are advised to use water that tastes right. After the right kind of water has been obtained, the next step is the cleaning of equipment to be used. Bleach or iodine can be used for the cleaning process but they should be washed off with water.

Once all the apparatus is clean, then they can be placed within reach. The preparation of the Wort will involve the use of the hops, together with the malt extracts. Boil water using the stock pot. The amount of water boiled depends on the quantity of brew being produced. The water will be used in the preparation of the Wort. Wort is a concentrated concoction that is used to create the final product.

The boiled water is stirred in together with the malt extracts. Always make sure that the malt does not stick to the stock pot. Once the malt extracts stick to the pot, they burn and therefore produce bitter alcoholic drinks.

Once the Wort has been prepared, it should be allowed to simmer. While the mixture is still cooking, put in the hops. The mixture should be left for an additional quarter of an hour to one hour. As the mixture boils, the malt and hops undergo a breaking down process. This breakdown leads to the release of compounds needed for fermentation.

Let the Wort cool down by placing it in a sink full of ice water. Let the pot stand in the water for twenty or so minutes. The mixture is ready once it is eighty degrees. If it is hotter than that, it will compromise the brewer’s yeast. The dry yeast has to be added into a cup of warm water prior to use. It takes five minutes for froth to form. This is an indication of the live yeast culture produce. In the event that the live yeast culture does not form, prepare a fresh mixture.

Ensure that the clean carboy has the right amount of clean water in it. Add the warm Wort into the carboy. Add the yeast mixture and close the container. Make sure that you shake the mixture to ensure that the yeast is evenly distributed.

More water is added into the container, which is then lidded using a special lid that releases the gases formed during distillation. Once the container is sealed, it should be placed in a dark place for two weeks.

Once two weeks are over, add a mixture of water and corn syrup to the fermented mixture. Swirl the carboy to spread the sugar throughout the mixture. The present yeast will get rid of excess sugar and therefore carbonate the bottle. Pour out the mixture into other bottles without disturbing the sediments. Cap the bottles and let them brew for a fortnight or more. The brewing beer instructions state that the longer the mixture takes to condition, the smoother it will be.

Tips For Making The Best Tasting Home Brewed Beer

22 January 2011

Approved by:
Paige Master, Gainesville Weddings in Gainesville Florida

You have bought all of the ingredients and have done all of your research to learn how to make home brew beer but for some reason, it does not seem to come out right. If you are unable to figure out exactly what it is that you are doing wrong, perhaps the following tips will offer you some assistance. This is a fun hobby that is enjoyed by many people and once you get it right, you too can have a lot of fun making beer.

The first thing you must consider is the water. When you make beer at home, do not use chlorinated water. If you live on a property that has a well, the chances are very slim that it is chlorinated. If in doubt, use spring water from the grocery store. If you use chlorinated water, such as city water, you will run the risk of your end product tasting very bad.

You should also avoid using water that is distilled. Spring water has minerals and nutrients that distilled water lacks. These minerals and nutrients are essential in making sure that the yeast will ferment properly. Spring or well water will provide you with the best tasting beer.

It is also imperative that you choose the freshest ingredients that you can get your hands on to make sure that your beer tastes its best. Do not use outdated yeast and purchase only hops that have been stored in the refrigerator. Dried malt extract is recommended over liquid as it has a longer shelf life. It will also create a lighter beer. To make sure that the malt is fresh you can bite into it. If it crunches, it is fresh.

You will want to take measures to ensure that you do not burn your brew. One way to do this is to take the pan off of the heat before you add your extract. This will help prevent you from scorching it or worse yet, having it burn to the bottom of the pot. By stirring while you add the extract, you can keep the extract off of the bottom of the pot so it will not burn.

The size of the brew pot is important. You will want to make sure that you are using one that will have plenty of room so that you can avoid the mess of the pot boiling over. A 5 gallon pot is perfect to make a batch that is 2 or 3 gallons in size. When you are boiling the wort, keep an eye on the pot and remove it from the heat if it appears that it is going to boil over.

To avoid having any off flavors develop, it is important that you cool off the wort as quickly as you can. You can use either an ice water bath or a wort chiller to cool it down quickly, usually within 15 to 20 minutes. Whatever you do, do not add ice to the wort.

The process to make home brew beer can be a lot of fun, especially once you have the basics down pat. Consider writing down everything you do and your recipe so that when you find a method that works best for you, you can follow it again in the future.
