The Super Bowl Focuses on the Wrong Kind of Alcohol Awareness

As a counselor for alcohol awareness classes I am quite familiar with the role alcohol plays in our society and is entwined  in our culture. My objective in educating about alcoholism is trying to get my students to become more educated about alcohol and its impact on our physiology. I try to make them aware about drinking and its impact on not only the body, but also those close to a person addicted to alcohol.

This time of year I frequently believe about another type of “alcohol awareness” – the powerful pitch to promote alcohol during the Super Bowl. The ads from Budweiser, Coors, and Heineken have become to many, more interesting from a viewing perspective than the football game. When people consider “Super Bowl” they think football, television ads and alcoholic beverages – and not necessarily in that order.

Let’s All Drink to the Super Bowl

Nobody should be surprised that “Super Bowl Sunday” competes  with  the 4th of July and December 31 as the days where the most people are arrested for drinking and driving.

In one of my recent alcohol classes I polled each of my students how many drank during the Super Bowl, and if they drank how much they drank. The numbers probably don’t surprise you. Out of twenty students, 90% had consumed alcohol during the previous Super Bowl. The two that didn’t – one was at work and the other had a bad cold.

A Super Binge

Of the 18 who had consumed alcoholic beverages, according to their memory, during the game they averaged 8 drinks each. Of course they said that the game lasts a long time and most were certain that they were sober enough to drive by the time the game was over. Almost half of the 18 said they had been intoxicated during the game. One passed out before the conclusion.

Super Bowl DUI

Only one of my students that day was attending class to take care of a Super Bowl DUI, but throughout the years many of my students were requred to take an alcohol awareness class from a arrest received after watching the big game.

Don’t become a statistic. I urge each and every one of you to make sure you have a designated driver for the Super Bowl if you plan on drinking. Remember, a cab is ALWAYS cheaper than a DUI.
